Your IELTS score is one of the crucial metrics Canadian universities consider in your application. An ideal score would be a band of 7.5 or higher, but many international students find this target hard to reach, which can hamper their chances of admission.

So, to help you, we have put together a list of the top ten universities in Canada which accept an IELTS score of band 6. Bear in mind, you will also be provided with the section-wise minimum scores.

1. CAMOSUN COLLEGE

Founded in 1971, Camosun College is located in Victoria, British Columbia, and has a student population of around 19,000, with 2100 international students from more than 80 countries. They have in total seven schools, including but not limited to Arts and Science, Business, Health and Human Services, among others, with 160+ academic programs.

2. CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY

Established in 1974, Concordia University is an English-Language institution located in the heart of Montreal. It is one of the top universities in Quebec.

The university has multiple faculties, including Arts and Science, Fine Arts, the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science, and a Centre for Continuing Education. This university has a student population of nearly 48,000, making it pretty sought after. Their John Molson School of Business has been consistently ranked among the top ten business schools in Canada.

3. DURHAM COLLEGE

Founded in 1967, Durham College is located in – you guessed it – Durham, Ontario. It offers a wide range of courses in fields ranging from art and media to skilled trade and engineering. More than 13,000 students are studying at Durham, with more than 2,000 being international students from over 60 countries.

4. HEC MONTREAL

Founded in 1907, HEC Montreal was the first business and management institute in Canada. It is a constituent school of Université de Montréal. It is accredited by the Association of MBAs(AMBA) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business(AACSB). They offer a range of bachelor’s and master’s degrees in various areas of business and management.

The school has a diverse set of students, numbering around 14,356. These include over 4,100 international students from nearly 151 countries.

5. KWANTLEN POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1981, Kwantlen Polytechnic University is a public university located in Surrey, British Columbia. They currently have 20,000 students enrolled. The university offers programs in over 120 academic disciplines. These include several vocational programs for skilled technicians, such as those in engineering and nursing.

The university was appointed as a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) on October 24, 2008. It is Canada’s only polytechnic university.

6. NIAGARA COLLEGE

Niagara College was founded in 1967, in Welland, Ontario. They were established with the sole purpose of providing more career opportunities to the students. As Canada started receiving an influx of tourists, they started training students for jobs in the tourism industry when they began the Tourism Industry Development Center(TIDC). They were the first Canadian college to teach brewery and winery courses. They have three campuses: the Welland campus, the Niagara-on-the-lake campus, and the Taif campus(in Saudi Arabia).

7. NIPISSING UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1967, Nipissing University is located in North Bat, Ontario. It is known for its small class sizes, a great staff, and providing a lot of research opportunities to the students. The university is famous for its eminence in the areas of art, science, and teacher education. They also offer undergraduate programs in areas including but not limited to, biology, classical studies, and economics. They also provide professional courses in business, commerce, and criminal justice.

8. UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE

The University of Lethbridge is an open research university founded in 1967, in Lethbridge, Alberta. It is associated with the International Association of Universities. The university focuses on liberal education, interdisciplinary programs, and experiential learning. They offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with around 9,000 students enrolled. The university comprises four faculties and three schools. They are:

9. VANCOUVER ISLAND UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1969, Vancouver Island University is a public university situated in Nanaimo, British Columbia. The university offers bachelor’s, master’s and diplomas in core areas of study including but not limited to: art, science and technology, health sciences, business and management, and education.

10. SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY

Saint Mary’s University(SMU) was founded in 1802 as a boys’ school, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It became a college in 1841 and was granted university status in 1952. It is considered one of Canada’s oldest Universities. They offer a plethora of undergraduate, graduate, and online learning programs in several fields like engineering, computer science, finance, health, and film studies. Over 7,000 students – both full-time and part-time – are enrolled at Saint Mary’s. Out of them, 29% are international students from over 118 countries.

SMU has a vast alumni network, numbering around 50,000! Some notable alumni have made a name for themselves in various spheres of excellence. Mayann Francis – Nova Scotia’s 31st lieutenant governor – is an SMU graduate. So is renowned guitarist and record producer Brian Ahern, famous for winning the Lifetime Achievement Award for Producer at the Americana Music Association Awards.
